How to Attract the A Team of IT Consultants

March 06, 2018

Hiring the right IT consultant is both an art and a science.

To find someone who is the perfect addition to your team, you must know what you are looking for, outlining clear qualifications and expectations for the role. You also need to pay attention to qualities in a candidate that are less tangible, like cultural fit, personality, and attitude.

But when you do find a talented person you want to hire, how do you make your company stand out among the competition? How do you entice your top candidate to join your team? Here are three simple ways to attract the best IT consultants.

Lead with purpose.

What does your company do? What makes your mission unique? How does this job contribute to your objectives? Ditch the generic write-ups; make your voice and your vision clear from the very first sentence of the job description. Be specific about what your ideal candidate will bring to the role, and why it is important to the company as a whole. You won’t appeal to everyone, but you will catch the attention of people who share your passion and goals.

Give clues into the company culture.

Through each step of the application and interview process, show potential candidates what makes your company a great place to work. What are your core values? How do you foster a sense of community among your staff? Use these characteristics as selling points. Mention the special benefits that improve work-life balance, or the professional development and mentorship opportunities that offer room for growth. Have current employees working in similar roles show applicants around the office and answer questions honestly.

Follow up in a timely manner.

Outline the different phases of your company’s hiring and onboarding process, and move candidates through each step efficiently. You can lose good applicants with unnecessary red tape or delays. Respect their time, letting them know when you will be in touch – and follow through on your promises.

It’s important to recognize that the best candidates are A candidates, and they are hired the fastest. You must understand their window of availability: how many interviews have they gone on? How many offers have they received? Time is always of the essence and acting quickly will ensure your company is staying competitive with its recruiting efforts.
